The Self-Advocacy Discussion Series

The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) with support from Anthem, is excited to host its third Self-Advocacy Discussion Series, and all are welcome!

The Self-Advocacy Discussion Series will be led by Eric Stoker, Information Specialist for the Utah DD Council, NACDD Board Member, Chair of the NACDD Self-Advocacy Committee (SAC), NACDD Champions of Equality Award winner and member of the  Self-Advocacy Leadership Circle.

SAVE-the-DATE: The Self-Advocacy Discussion Series will be held on December 17, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Eastern.

The Topic is Policy (What policies are important to you)

For this discussion, POLICY means the laws and rules that an Organization or the government makes.

POLICY is not about one person’s problem or issue. Policies are decided by a group of people to help many other groups of people.

Some examples could include: The Marriage Penalty, Medicaid Waivers and Accessible Transportation. There are many others and we want to hear what is important to you!

Discussion questions to think about for the NACDD SA Discussion Series on Policy.
1) If you were having lunch in the White House with the new President or a government leader, what would you tell them? What issues should they pay attention to over the next four years?

2) What policy is most important to you right now?

3) What have you done to support the policies you believe in? For example, joined a self-advocacy group, written letters to government officials (Mayor, Governor, Policy makers or other leaders), testified at a hearing in a courthouse etc.

4) What support do people need to be able to advocate for policies that are important to them?
